The Voice, America's Got Talent, American Idol (or equivalent in other countries), there's no average-Joe contestant, EVERYONE has a super sad story that brought them to such contest. I've heard that if you don't have one they make it up.

I’m sure some parts are real but I believe most are exaggerated for ratings and get people invested in them.

More than not believing them, I really don't care where they came from. Whenever I do come across any of those shows and decide to watch them for a bit, I mute the whole backstory stuff and only listen to their actual performance. Or I wait a few days and look for the video, where I can skip the parts I'm not interested in.
