It's called a motherboard because everything connects into it. Another name for a motherboard is mainboard.

donkey's years ago, computers were built with multiple small boards -- the central one was called the motherboard and the others were daughter boards. over the decades, the functions of the daughter boards were absorbed by the north and south bridges, and then by the cpu -- so the secondary boards were no longer needed.
