Why are operas so difficult to make?

What makes it different from a sonata?

Sonatas can be comparatively short and written for one instrument (or an accompanied soloist) whereas an opera is sometimes written for an extensive orchestra and many voices, has to tell a narrative and may be many hours long. Even a short operetta will be at least 30-45 minutes in order to tell a satisfactory story. Of course an opera is harder - it is much more complicated.
