Resign as para or tough it out?

I have a dilemma. I am considering resigning as a paraprofessional mid-way through the school year due to having to come back in-person. I don't have a disability or health issues I am fit to go in person, however I live with my dad and grand-father. They are both considered at risk for covid-19 complications. I really don't want to take the risk of going in person until I get the 2 vaccine shots. I was hoping to finish the last school year virtual and by the summer resign so I can become a teacher in the fall. I've got myself lined up to start interviewing for teaching positions in this district. I'm concerned that if I resign this will kick me out of the teacher selection process or make my reference with the principal sour. My impact looks good for the first quarter and I have great talking points about what I have done in the school. I don't want it to go to waste if my application is dropped. What should I do?

Your grandfather should qualify for the vaccine already, and would be protected. Your father will qualify soon. You'll probably qualify yourself, soon. Don't let this pandemic sabotage your future. Take proper precautions and protect yourself and your loved ones the way we all have during this crisis. Many people have been working all along, and are protected by by being careful.

You do not need to resign. You first go to HR and ask for accommodations due to your situation. They will likely say that there are no suitable accommodations and you will be placed on leave. Even if it ends up being unpaid leave, you still didn't quit. Worst case scenario they let you go which is definitely a legal gray area especially during a pandemic. But even if it is that or unpaid leave, that puts you in the same boat financially as quitting.

Go through the process. It can't end up any worse than resigning. If you don't know what the process is, talk to someone in HR.

yes, your resignation will have that effect on your chances of getting the job.  Frankly, you've managed for an entire year already ... another few months [until after you've been vaccinated] is not very likely to be any different.
