I'm surprised with the large number of people with Fall birthdays graduating from high school at 17 years old instead of 18, in Washington State you had to turn 5 by September 1st to start Kindergarten.

Because they were about to turn five. My best friend's birthday is September 17. He started kindergarten September 1 when he was four, but he was only four for 16 days of kindergarten, fewer when you take out the weekends. He was five for the whole rest of the school year.
