How often should I take my dog outside to see if there is blood in his stool?

Last night I noticed my dog had blood in his stool. My vet said to monitor him, and check his stool. Thing is, sometimes he doesn't go in the morning, so there is no stool to monitor. I was taking him outside like every half hour, but he just stands there, and looks confused. Should I just wait for him to tell me when he needs to go? That could be like 4 hours from now.

I know what they said. They said monitor his behavior. I swear that's what they said.

Give your dog a meal and he should poop. If the blood was only a tiny bit on the surface this may be why the vet said to monitor.

If the poop was mushy or it was diarrhea with blood, he should go to the vet. If the next poop is mushy and/or has blood in it, don't wait but take to the vet. If this vet does not want to see him, then find a vet who will make an appointment. Blood in the stool and especially if along with diarrhea is nothing to fool around with.

Be sure you are feeding your dog a bit of water mixed with his food. A dog eating only dry food with no water, may have trouble digesting it, and then become constipated. That might cause a bit of blood just on the surface of hard poops. In that case, feed dry/with water/even a bit of canned mixed in - make a nice "stew" for the dog. We NEVER fed dry-only to our dogs.

Diarrhea is reason for a vet visit and don't wait. Not pooping for a day is reason for a vet visit because the dog could have an obstruction.

Doesn't your dog let you know when it needs to go potty?  You can take your dog out often but that doesn't mean he is going to poop unless he needs to.  Just wait it out & he will go when he needs to.  You can't force a dog to poop, you have to wait, even if it takes several hours.

Every hour of your life. Since you want to turn your life around for a dog.

Quite honestly I find it odd that a vet would tell you that.   I'd take the situation into your own hands (not literally) and collect some of his stool soo your vet can do a fecal test to diagnose what IS going on there.    He may have Giardia or some other internal parasite and the sooner this is identified, and treated, the better.   You shouldn't sit and wait.    Poor boy, small wonder he's confused.com.

ps   Blood in a STOOL won't be a Urinary Tract Infection!!!   UTI = Infection in the Urinary Tract.

........and when your vet said 'to monitor him' did your vet also tell you the date/time for the appointment? NO...no vet would tell you  'to monitor' if you had bothered to phone, they would tell you to go and take your dog to the vets asap ... so instead of your self adviced monitoring........ PHONE your vet and get it in asap to see the vet as blood in the stool could be a blockage could be a UTI or could be many things ALL NEED INVESTIGATING AND TREATMENT
