Kitchen backsplash ideas....any design experts?

We are looking to put up some kind of decorative kitchen backsplash behind our stove.  It would just be the area above the stove and below the hood/vent, almost a square shape. It is probably going to be a temporary one until we are able to re-do our kitchen.  I've looked at peel & stick tile wallpaper, but our walls are textured/bumpy, so I don't think that's an option.  Are there any other options or ideas that would work?

@Anonymous, thanks for all the info!  We have the textured walls everywhere too.  The take-no-prisoners approach is what it needs, and it would make it totally smooth for a temporary backsplash.  Thanks for the curbly website link, I got some ideas there!!

The rough texture is going to cause a problem no matter what you do, unless you just decide to scrub it good and repaint it often until you redo the whole kitchen. Nothing is going to stick well or look smooth once adhered.

(My house has that rough wall texture everywhere, too. The previous owners attempted to wallpaper the entryway, apparently shortly before selling. It doesn't look smooth and it's coming down in places only a month or two later.)

What I'd consider is a take-no-prisoners approach: cover the stove well and get in there with scraper and sander. Remove the rough texture. Smooth any gouges with spackling compound. Unless you would be relocating the stove in a future kitchen upgrade, it will do no harm to smooth the wall surface. The permanent some-day backsplash will need a smooth backing.

This lets you put up whatever temporary backsplash you like, from those wallpaper tiles to a sheet of scrub-able scenic wallpaper panel. Some of the tiles I'm seeing look really nice: https://www.curbly.com/removable-backsplash-ideas

Be sure and use something that will burn, like tape up some old newspaper behind your stove.

You could do the 1 piece stainless steel, which pretty much goes with anything, but it's not very decorative.  They do sell them in a few sizes 30x24 -30x30 - 36x30.

The largest online retailer sells them...Not allowed to mention the name on YA.
