Question

A locomotive with a mass of 6.4 x 105 kg is accelerating at 0.12 m/s2 [W] while pulling a train car with a mass of 5.0 x 105 kg. Assume that negligible friction is acting on the train.
 (a) Draw the FBDs of the locomotive and the train car.
How can I draw the free body diagram for this question?

The system is friction free, therefore force MF  is just for accelerating both masses !!

motive force MF = (m1+m2)*a = 11.4*10^5*0.12 = 136.8 kN
accelerating force AF1 = MF*m1/(m1+m2) = 137*6.4/11.4 = 76.8 kN
accelerating force AF2 = MF*m2/(m1+m2) = 137*5.0/11.4 = 60.0 kN
