Only 'the hardship' works in this construction. It is being specific, so it needs the defnite article. Contrast with: She wanted to spare her children hardship.

Because you are being specific and saying ''of farm ownership''
then you need the THE.
She wanted to spare her children the hardship of farm ownership.
