Metres and Miles are from two different linear measuring systems. 
Metres is in the metric system , miles is in the Imperial system. 
The conversion factor is  1 inch = 2.54 cm 
The metric table is 
10 mm = 1 cm 
100 cm = 1 m 
1000 m = 1 km 
The Imperial system is 
12 inches = 1 foot 
3 feet = 1 yard
22 yards = 1 chain 
10 chain = 1 furlong 
 8 furlongs = 1 mile. 

Hence there are  12 x 3 x 22 x 10 x 8 = 63360 inches in 1 mile
It follows 
63360 x 2.54 = 160934.4 cms in 1  mile
160934.4 / 100 = 1609.344 metres in1  mile (The answer)!!!!
1609.344 / 1000 = 1.609344 km in 1 mile.
