Fast food and laziness are the culprits. In this busy world, people are too busy running around from here to there. It's just easier to get pre-made food in 2 minutes from McD's then to actually cook something themselves. It's really sad if you ask me. I recently moved to Europe from USA and can't get over the vast difference! So many fewer people have cars here and actually WALK miles and miles a day. Mealtimes are nearly a celebration with a lot of preparation going into the food. But the fast food chains are getting more and more prominent here, and soon, I'm sure Europe will have an obesity problem as well. Especially if they start driving more...

Portion control

Manufacturer’s untruthfulness in labeling
Lack of good Fats & Carbohydrates in the diet.
Plain out laziness (Lack of exercise)
Most other countries do not have the same type of fast food restraints, they actually take the time to wait for their food to be prepared.

It's much more than just fast food. Compare America to every other first world country, and you will see a lot of federal corruption regarding what can actually be put in your food, especially beef. However, huge drinks and large portions also add to it. However, genes can't be blamed for it.

Fast foods. Americans like their convenience too much. also too much TV and video games, oh yeah computers too. Can't burn those calories while sitting.
