Pixel to Centimeter conversion?
Hi there,
Can anyone inform me the conversion between Pixel to Centimeter (or vice-versa) please? I am working with MS Office Picture Manager 2003 and want to crop a picture for printing, but stuck with pixel measurement. I need to print with cm precision.
Thank you for your help.

You cannot convert from pixel to centimeter. A pixel is a relative, virtual unit of measurement that expands and contracts according to how many points are drawn on one screen. For example, if you set your screen resolution to 1024x768, this means your screen is currently using 1024 x 768 = 786432 channels of color to draw the current view.
Use Adobe photoshop as it allows you to actually set the "actual" number of centimeters of your current photo, by letting you adjust the photo size.

Pixel is short for picture element. It is one dot of a digital picture grid. Normally, there is no conversion between pixels and centimeters. If you take a picture with 6 million pixels it can be printed as small or large as you like. Normally, printers have just a few choices though: 72 dpi (dots per inch, which is the same as pixels per inch) or 150 dpi or 300 dpi. A six megapixel image is about 3000 pixels wide so at 300 dpi it would be ten inches wide.

It's not a simple conversion... Usually, the resolution of a device is measured in dots per inch, with monitors being usually anywhere from 72 to 100, and printers printing at 300+ (up to a claimed 2880 in some cases). How each program decides to convert screen pixels into print sizes is different. Photoshop and The Gimp both allow setting of the desired resolution and print size directly.
Since this isn't possible, I would suggest drawing and printing a "ruler" using lines with, say, 100px increments. You can then work out how many screen pixels you're getting per printed cm, and therefore calculating the desired size.

You need to first decide what the DPI (dot per inch) resolution you will be printing at. 300DPI is very normal, and any higher doesn't really give you any benefits.
With that in mind it is fairly simple to work out the pixels to cm conversion.
since their are 300 dots per inch, then we can say that 300 pixels are 2.54cm.
1 cm is therefore 118.1102 pixels.!

I use Picture It, which shows me how many pixels are in a centimeter or an inch. It says the 1 cm is 118 px, so I agree with Wabbitt.

They are different, pixels are dots in a picture. An 800x600 picture can be printed with any dimentions in terms of inches or centimeters.
If you are talking about pixels-per-inch, then it's a different story. Remember 1 inch = 2.54 cm. So if you want to pring an 800x600 picture with a resolution of 300DPI (dots-per-inch, same as pixels-per-inch), then you will get 2.67x2 inches, which is about 6.78x6.08 cm.
