The only arguments in defense of tobacco have to do with libertarianism. Basically, that whether or not tobacco is potentially harmful, people have the right to make the decision about whether or not to use it without government intervention.

Smoking is not the only thing that causes lung, mouth, and throat cancer. Anecdotally, some people live a very long time even though they have smoked copiously for decades; however, the odds are against that. Tobacco companies have had to go public with that information, as well as the information that they have manipulated the nicotine content in cigarettes in order to get people more addicted. There's no question about that whatsoever.

Another weird argument that the tobacco companies would never use is that healthcare costs of smokers are actually lower than the costs for nonsmokers - because smokers die earlier. Lung cancer kills people pretty fast; it's a relatively efficient killer, and there aren't that many treatments.

Finally, one can't really trust addicts to come clean about the truth of their addiction. Smokers are addicted to nicotine; tobacco companies are addicted to money. One wouldn't want to turn to either of them for unbiased information.

[The fact that other substances might cause cancer is in no way pertinent to the case of tobacco. That's a red-herring; it pretends to address the question but in fact just makes an illegitimate substitution of terms that aren't analogous. Also, if a face cream did cause cancer, I would want to know about it so that I could stop using it.]

What makes you think the democrats are afraid of honest debate ? What I see is a congress totally dominated by democrats who even with solid majorities ,can't get anything done . But I don't see them afraid to talk. They need to stop talking and actually do some governing before they all get voted out . What are they afraid of ?
