Moving to the Washington,DC area & want to get info on towns nearby.I know there is site to help. Know of it?

I once logged on to this great site that asked you to answer questions about the type of place you wanted to live and parameters for selection (how much you could afford for rent or house, if you needed to commute, big town or small, etc.) I want to find that site or one similar so I can narrow down my search for a home near DC. Can you please help? THANKS!

Hello GGG. I received your message and will now endeavour to answer your question as best I can. I'm no expert on the Washington-Baltimore metro area but I have lived in Annapolis, Maryland for several years now. Washington DC itself can be a difficult housing market to penetrate, usually because the housing (particularly private homes and townhouses) is either unaffordable or on the poverty line. There isn't much in between, which explains a lot of the city's problems.

Your best best would be to search for a home in suburban Maryland or Northern Virginia (all of my friends and family in the area live in one or the other). I am attaching links to home finders (similar to what you described in your question) in both Virginia and Maryland, below. There is also a link to affordable housing from the HUD (Housing and Urban Development) department which you may find useful. The last link is a national housing search function which, again, may prove useful to you if you elect to relocate to a different part of the US.

I'm sorry I am unable to give as precise information as I was able to give Ronsfreak regarding the housing market in the Buffalo, New York area, but please understand that I did live there for almost 30 years. I can tell you that, given the criteria you described in your IM, your best searches would be in Montgomery County and Prince George's County in Maryland, as well as Fairfax County in Virginia. DC itself is a tough nut to crack and the commuting times from the places I've mentioned are not bad, plus there is an extensive Metro system of trains, both above and below ground.

I do hope this information is helpful to you and that you and your family have a safe trip to the US from Africa. You know how to contact me now, so please don't hesitate to do so if I can be of any further help, ok? You may also receive additional helpful information from other answerers on the site, so do keep checking back on the status of your question.

    Good luck and Godspeed! :)

OH man, I hope you realize how expensive the real estate is there. I just moved from there and hated the area. They have too much traffic, over-priced housing and snobby residents. Good luck, you'll need it.
