My kid wants to go into police work. What are some good schools and fields of study?

If your child wants to become a police....you can look into a university that has a criminal justice program...if he wants to work with the FBI or TSA..have him take as a second major..some type of psychology class...with a criminal justice bachelors degree there are many fields that he can move into...the chioces will more than he can handle....Be sure that he does not get into any type of trouble with finances or drugs...these 2 areas can keep him out of the field

    Good luck to you both!

The John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York is highly regarded.

Criminal justice is like military intelligence - an oxymoron! Most individuals who take courses in CJ have no interest in justice, just a power trip. I have worked for organizations who were responsible for testing candidates for police departments. EVERY P.D. had the same characteristics they were looking for: Big on being in control, low on tolerance, very concrete thinking.

Usually a good community college that offers the courses needed are all that you need. Also have your kids do some ride alongs with the locals to see if that's up their alley before you spend tons of money putting them through something they may not end up liking.

The future? Seems to be in corrections, but there are more street cops in Sheriff's Departments and Municipalities than there are Feds and stuff(though the Feds and State boys usually get paid better and have better job security.)

    Good luck!

I agree with Dad, so far everything he has answered I agree with. I can add that your child should talk to the recruiters at your local PD. When I was taking all my Admin Justice courses I was told that they really prefer you to be well rounded take other course work. I did a lot of volunteer work with the SO as well as the ride alongs that "Dad" was referring to.

    I wish him the best.

I personally would avoid TSA still having to many issues with there employment policy's.
