I send stories out to be published every month and the average length for short stories that editors want is 1000-5000 words. A good place to find magazines that might want your story is StoryPilot's Science Fiction & Fantasy Market Engine. Here's a link http://storypilot.com/ Good luck!

A short story can be anywhere between 5-10,000 words. If you're looking for a good place to publish anything, check out Writers' Digest. They have thousands of listings telling you exactly what each publisher wants. It will save you an enormous number of rejection slips!~
Good luck

Try a sci-fi and fantasy magazine. Many have length limits and pay by the word. Those currently active include Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, Analog, and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.
