Why did Aaronson and Rutherford have broken noses?
Ive scoured the internet, looked through the book, and cannot find a satisfactory explanation for why Orwell's resistance leaders' noses were broken.
From 1984 (Chapter 7 p. 66):
The three men remained motionless, but Winston saw that Rutherford's eyes were full of tears, and suddenly noticed that both Aaronson and Rutherford had broken noses.
Its likely that this passage provides nothing more than Orwell's indication that resistance is futile, a kind of foreshadowing of Winston's experiences to come, but I dont want that to be true. Someone more well read than me, Please ease my curiosity!
