Why is John steinbeck's "East of Eden" such a popular book?

Please do not tell me the main plot of the story. i am just trying to find some good reasons to go ahead and read this book. thanks.

    Because he was a brilliant writer and the story is enthralling. It is a classic and his writing stylle was very lyrical. No other writer could touch him artistically, he was THAT good!

    because John Steinbeck went to high school with my great grandmother. DUH! ... jk...I think East of Eden's really popular for the same reason any other book is popular - because it's well written, and people can relate to it in one way or another.
