What would be a good gift for a would-be 15 year old author?

My mom bought me Natalie Goldberg's book Writing Down the Bones at about that time, and it's still very special to me today. John Gardener's The Art of Fiction is a bit more dense, but also an excellent book for a beginning writer.

Also, if there are any colleges in your area, contact the English department and ask if any writers will be coming to give readings on campus. These events are almost always free and open to the public, and your daughter could buy a book and get it signed. While this may not work in time for her birthday, it's something you two could attend together, and it might be a nice surprise for her.

At first I would think a lab top computer to write with but then I thought what about a trip somewhere that is known for authors or where literary works can be viewed. Or what about a writing class... just some ideas. Find out her favorite and go from there.

Does she already have a bank account? If not maybe that,so she learns to save and manage her own money.The present would be to start her off with a big chunk of change in it. Also a modest party. Tell everyone to bring book related presents,and tell her relatives to bring a book with money in between the pages.Like 20 or 30 dollars in ones. Hope she has a Happy Birthday!

How bout making a scrapbook, like a personal portfolio, w/ all the stories and poems she has wrote since little. Mayb some of her artwork also. and make sure to leave room for more stories, if you have pix of her hard at her writing that can go in there, English papers..etc... Also a nice first edition book from her fave author.

Laptop is a good one too, someone mentioned.

If it doesnt have to be about writing, her first pair of diamond earrings, or ring, jewelry is sentimental to us ladies. lol hint hint gentlemen! lol

A really nice Laptop. And a really comfortable chair to sit in for writing. Something contemporary possibly. How about a really great desk lamp she would like? Or a gift card for one of those popular office supply stores where she can pick out what she likes. You can always take her shopping for these things so you know what she really wants. I used to hate it when I received something I didn't really like or want.

Something that one of the characters from her favourite book had. You might know as you are her mother but you could also ask her in a roundabout way e.g I am 16 and I would love a locket for my birthday that had my parents pictures in it as I once read about such lockets in a book.

how about enrolling her in a weekend writer's workshop if you can find one close to home? She will make some great contacts and learn so much. It will say to her " I believe you have a gift and want you to share it."
