Do you feel that America is ready to elect a female to the oval office?

In my humble opinion, I believe those elected to a high office should merit the position regardless or sex or race or creed. We have deprived ourselves of better leadership because of chauvinistic ways. In other countries, we have seen women have the courage of the convictions to do many things, and we have seen minorities that have surpassed others because perhaps they simply try harder. Hilliary is not an answer as she is too hard-bitten and brittle. We need someone with the guts of Margaret Thatcher, the wiles of Mati Hari, and the compassion of Mother Theresa and the astuteness of Eleanor Rooseveld. She will need to be of immaculate conception and her husband will have had a penile amputation (to prevent philandering), her hair must never have suffered a dye job and her clothes must be off the rack. She will be picked apart at every opportunity by the media and the everyday housewife....and heavens forbid! Could her Vice President and her cabinet declare her unable as being menopausal? Some people lust for power, but I believe that the wise seek lesser positions.

I'm afraid it's only ready to elect one on television. I do think it will happen one day, just not in 2008 and probably not anytime soon after that. An unfortunate fact about this country is that there are many "bigots" , racists, and ultra Neocons who would never let ultimate power slip from a proper "God Fearing" white man's grip. These are the same people who would have "bombed Pakistan back into the stone age" (as quoted by President Musharraf) if they had not cooperated in every way with The War on Terror-the war without boundaries, the war without end.
Yes, we will one day elect a women as president. Women have reached every other Laval of government except the executive branch. The most likely scenario at this point would be a woman running against a very unpopular candidate. That's when people would start using the old phrase "let's just pick the lesser of the two evils"
Anyway, as America matures I believe the acceptance that a woman is capable of being the "leader of the free world" will begin to take root. I'd look for a female President sometime around 2050.

Yes, I think American is ready to vote for the best person for the job. But if Hilary is the only female who might run, she won't be elected. Not because she's female, but because most people, including myself, feel that she would make a sorry excuse for a president.

Yes, at some point there will be a woman elected as president. However, it won't be anytime soon because there isn't a strong enough candidate.
Besides, we had one for 8 years already. The Clinton administration wasn't run by Bill and that turned out so well...

At least in my part of the country, people are not ready. We have a woman running for governor right now, and I hear people constantly say (male and female) that they will not vote for a woman. When questioned, they can give no other reason than it's just not right, not Biblical. Ridiculous, in my opinion.

Personally I have no problem with it. I don't necessarily agree that it would be good to have a woman president just because she is a woman. I guess what I am saying is that the person's gender wouldn't factor into my decision. If they're qualified then they're qualified.

Ya sure, but in a world where our enemy are Islamic radicals, we need to have a man, because in Islam women are inferior to men (i don't agree that), the enemy will not even respect our leaders, that's why a man would be better suited for this job even though women can be strong to like Margaret Thatcher. And if Hilliary Clinton ran, i would not vote for her anyway!

i imagine so! i did not imagine we may opt for a 'black' president in my lifetime! i imagine a lady may be less complicated to opt for than a racial minority. yet Bachmann or Pelosi? Hmmmm, per chance no longer. it truly is like asking if the US is able to opt for an overweight guy, like Rush Limbaugh. 8^P
