how do I preserve pinecones?

I want to make some Christmas decorations out of them, so I would like them to last a couple of years.

Soak cones in warm water with 1/2 cup vinegar added for 1/2 hour. Allow to air-dry. Lay on newspaper and spray with varnish -- - allow each coat to dry thoroughly before re-spraying.

Dry brown pine cones last forever without any special treatment. My mom has had a collection of cones in a bowl for many years. I don't think you can preserve green cones.

lay them out so none are on top of each other, let dry for 2 weeks. spray them well with clear polyurethane paint.they will last for years.
