Make sure that Yahoo Messenger is the program that will receive this command (so click on Yahoo Messenger and make sure you don't click on any other program before you do this): hold down the "control" key and then press the "d" key.
You could also go to the "Messenger" menu at the top of the Yahoo Messenger program and look at the bottom of the options that drop down. "Sign Out" should be almost all the way at the bottom of the options.
