What is the meaning of the word "bootstraps" in the following sentence?

Haplogroup C chromosomes are common south of the Phillipines, with a significantly greater diversity, calculated as the average variance of the repeat score across loci, in the southern populations (Southeast Asia and Melanesia) than in the northern ones (southern China and Taiwan) (P<.01; 1,000 bootstraps over chromosomes) (tables 1 and 2).

Given its proximity to the impressive reported P-value, I'm not sure if the term is a reference to genetics or statistics. Anybody know?

A bootstrap in this case is a statistical term. It is a method for estimating sample distribution or an estimator by resampling with replacement for the origional sample. It is a way to establish a confidence that the results are repeatable and not just something else going on.
