My doubt is: what does "getting to grips" mean?

Getting to grips means accepting and understanding.
He's saying:
"Well, I'm accepting and understanding what you said"
Usually it refers to something painful, like:
Getting to grips that your dog got run over by a car
Getting to grips that the person you love only wants to be your friend
etc,
