To have a nice showy flower you must have a loose, well drained soil for the bulb to grow in. Where I live and work, we have coarse sands that do well for growing them given a decent watering schedule. If your soil tends to get hard and clumpy, add organic matter to it such as compost to loosen the area you are planting them.
