What's with all the NFL QB's constantly licking their hands?

I've been an NFL football addict for years and it's only recently that I've noticed that today's QB's tend to lick their hands constantly. Is there a reason for this or is it just a disgusting habit someone started and the others just followed suit? Favre is especially bad for doing this. They don't like to play with a wet football, yet they lick their dirty hands and then touch it. Makes no sense to me.

Update:

I thought it had to do with grip too, but then I noticed they were doing it when they are just standing on the sidelines or walking off the field.

Back in 1964, Rick Geurone, the 3rd string QB for the Bears licked his fingers when he got in the game and threw the game winning 78 yard touchdown pass with 1 minute and 6 seconds left in regulation; after the starter and his primary backup both suffererd career ending injuries in the same game. He claimed that he licked his fingers to get a "taste of the game, because he had not played in such a long time" (he was a life long backup and hadn't taken a snap in 4 years) I guess everyone else followed him afterwards

It's all for the grip...They also blow to warm up the hands so they can feel the ball better...

no they don't lick their hand they lick their fingers because if you have thrown a football then you know that when you lick your fingers it lets you hold the foootball better and gives you better velocity

So they can grip the ball.

They're used to lickin balls, so they have to do something to pass the time until they get off the field.

I think it is for grip, when it is cold their fingers are dry.

so the ball doesn't slip out of dry fingers when it is snapped to them
