Just how long are taxpayers supposed to pay for Katrina victims housing?

Seriously, how many months of aid are they allowed? I mean, the hurricane was 17 months ago, shouldn't they be getting on with their lives by now?

Update:

HarmNone - I'm not being mean, I'm just asking how long are these people waiting to go on with their lives? You can't just sit there and expect things to get better.

I think you ask a fair question. Personally, I must disagree with HarmNone’s answer.

A sick fact of life is that the world doesn’t care about personal tragedy. Not matter what happens in an individual’s life, the world goes on. The person can either sit and feel sorry for themselves, letting the world pass them by, or they can roll with it and keep on going.

The personal hardships that the victims of Katrina are hardly unique. Thousands of people in America face equally devastating hardships and are able to continue on with their lives. Some examples?

A battered woman to leave’s her husband with nothing but her kids

A high school or college student to steps out in the world

A family of a person killed in Iraq

    Victims of other natural disasters

People who lose everything because of a lack of health insurance.

A family who’s breadwinner lost their job

A teenager who lose both parents to a car accident

    Civilians in war zones

In the list I provided, some people start with more than others, some start with nothing. Some people start with nothing.

Personally, when I graduated college, I left with a bed, a dresser, a suitcase full of clothes, $1000, and my pick-up truck. I found work and moved. I had to get a roommate to pay bills, but I was able to do so. Sure I had a safety net in my family, but my goal was to succeed on my own.

Perhaps the media lied to me (wouldn’t be the first time), but it seems that the government moved many people to other areas around the country. What happened to these people is terrible, but it is time for them to start over. Victims need to eventually accept the fact that the only thing inevitable in life is change. The world is passing them by. They need to quit worrying about what they lost that “took them a lifetime to build”. They need to worry about the family they have and making a new future for themselves.

I listen to stories about how people are upset that they can not afford to go back home to NO or other areas in the South. They complain that they lost all they knew. This is called life!! Sh*t happens! People have had to survive on less than they received.

More than once in my life, I have lost all I knew due to a natural disaster (F5 tornado that leveled a few towns) and personal tragedy (family torn apart). I know the pain of losing everything and starting over. It takes years to deal with, but you have to deal with it.

Americans have a sick, twisted concept of reality. Americans seemed to be caught up in what they “deserve” rather than being thankful for what they have. I have seen enough 3rd world sh*tholes in my life. Since traveling to poverty stricken areas of the world, I have never complained about what I had. A minimum wage existence in America would be luxury to people in other parts of the world.

How long should victims be supported? There is no easy answer. I’m all for helping people. I donated to the Red Cross and helped get food from the Chicagoland area to the NO area. However, people can not expect to rely on charity their whole life.

I think Lee Greenwood said it best in “God Bless the USA”:

If tomorrow all the things were gone,

I’d worked for all my life.

And I had to start again,

with just my children and my wife.

    I’d thank my lucky stars,

    to be livin here today.

‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom,

and they can’t take that away.

Seriously? Ok.... how about this. I am going to come to your house. Flood it, loot it, and kill a few random members of your family. Then, I'm going to take away your job and any other jobs in the surrounding area. Tell me how long you think you might need help rebuilding what you have spent your life to build.

What happened to these people was awful and it could have been prevented.
