help connecting a phone line into my new apartment?
i have just moved into a brand new apartment and BT (british telecom) have already wired the place for phone lines. They told me an engineer needs to come out and do the final connection at a cost of £125. I would imagine it isnt much to connect up the phone line, and was wondering if there is a way to do it myself - does anyone know or can suggest possible options?

That's impossible to answer without being able to see what needs to be done.
£125 is rather steep...I'm surprised the apartment didn't complete the work prior to tenants moving in...I wonder what else they didn't finish.
Try putting an add on Craig's List for a BT Engineer or former Engineer who works for herself and will do the work for half price or less.
Or, call BT and see if they can walk you through it. If they are anything like SBC (now AT&T), you won't get any help that way.

If they mean that the engineer will make the final connection at the phone company terminal there is nothing you can do, but if they mean that they will charge the money to do any work in your place then i think you can hire someone to do it for you for less. You can check the site below it has helpful information about phone lines. Good luck.

SexyTrojan has a good answer, but in the USA it is the law that at least one outlet in the house/apt. HAS to work. Try to explain this to management of the apt. and see if the BT tech will tell them as well. I have on many occasions quite forcefully told landlords that the law states that they MUST provide one working jack, whether they pay us to do it or as the previous poster stated, hire a 3rd party.

with a view to get the cyber web, your computing gadget desires to be linked to the community by using some style of connection. once you're making use of dial-up, this is in the process the telephone line. in case you do no longer hire dial-up, then it does not connect in the process the telephone line. working example, in case you have Cable cyber web, you hook the modem as much as the cable line and then use an Ethernet cable (evidently like a fat telephone cable) to connect the modem on your computing gadget. wireless is a 2-way radio gadget. with a view to connect with a wireless community, your computing gadget desires a wireless radio. very almost all laptops incorporate the chip and antenna for that geared up-in. desktops frequently do no longer. you may circulate to any electronics keep and purchase a wireless card which you would be able to plug into your computing gadget to permit it to get wireless.
