Why 43 cars in the field?

What is so special about this number - 42 or 44 would result in two cars per row on the start?

It's to pay homage to Richard Petty. The king's # was 43...not really!

In the old days of 1/2 mile tracks it was probably the most that could fit onto the track and have some movement. To make all the races of have equal point value, that limit was placed on all tracks.

43 is okay for super speedways but not for 1 mile tracks. 2, 150 lap elimination races then a final race with 200-250 laps would be more exciting.

nothing but they should make it 48 or 50 so some of the cars deserving to make the race do locking in 35 is a bad idea maybe the top 25 but allow some of these guys to get in the race on speed.

It was an arbitrary number selected 50 years ago. Nothing complicated.
