Is it possible for Penang(in Malaysia) to emerge as the futuristic tourist spot to the eyes of the World?

It's funny you should ask that question as I was just reading about Penang in wikipedia (I'm doing some research on my possible honeymoon resort)

It was interesting to read just now that up till the second world war Penang was the home to many Jews, how strange is that in a Muslim country?

Anyway, to your answer, well, the word you used 'futuristic' suggests things like people living in bubbles under the sea after a nuclear war, or little spaceships flying around like in the cartoon 'The Jetsons' and science fiction things like that.

So I cant really see anything like that happening to Panang in the near future.

I read somewhere that there is a internationally renowned club in Panang called D'Boss club, I will have to check it out if I'm there this year.

Ever since Francis Light set foot on its soil, Penang (both the island and a mainland strip of land) has been one of the biggest tourism and commercial centers in Malaysia. Tourism is the second largest income earner for the state (after manufacturing). Today, Penang is a world-class tourism destination blending modern metropolitan development with old world heritage. With the cooperation of various tourism-related industries, Penang's state government has also been promoting its touristic appeal worldwide, in addition to the efforts of the Malaysian government.

As for its possibility in becoming a much more featured tourist spot in the future, it depends on continual promotions by all parties concerned, and positive publicity and word-of-mouth from visitors. Penang will simply have to continue as a place to visit in the future for the sake of its economic survival.

BTW, if you mean "futuristic" tourist spot as in redesigning Penang to forego the past and embrace futuristic tourist attractions, I don't think the locals will be willing to give up their unique heritage just yet!!

The attraction and success of Penang as a tourist destination lie in its antiquity, the 'Britishness' and its local culture. While it modernizes, it also should preserve and retain; for example ferries must continue to ply no matter how many land bridge are planned; existing road names (British) must not be changed to a Jalan Ching Chong Chang, or a Jalan Abdullah Lala; above all avoid building more tower blocks and skyscrapers - Penang will never be any kind of economic or financial centre (not strategically located). I shudder to associate Penang with the word "futuristic".

No lah.. i dont think so as in 'futuristic' way..why must modernised something that's so special like those heritage buildings and such..its much more better to preserved it and share it with all and the future generation will appreciate it more about our history and culture...

Penang is just nice as it is..not need to much development..you can always find modern and futuristic in the city....

Maybe if the government stop the toll, price hikes and taxes, if not foreign investment will be gone also.
