URGENT HELP NEEDED - burning smell battery indicator and stop light on?
This evening I stopped to get petrol. When I drove away there was a burning smell ( electrical ) I had unusally loud feedback from my amplifier and there was a funny noise from the engine. I stopped the car and looked under the bonnet but couldn't see anything wrong. I started the engine and the battery and stop light came on and then occassionally flashed, but now they have stayed on. I drove carefully to a nearby Renault Specialist. They were closing up for a day, they could smell the smell, looked under the bonnet, disconnected the negative and rubbed it on the terminal and it sparked from that they said it looked like there were no short circuits. Then they just said that I probably need a new alternator and it would probably cost me over £300! I have a Renault Clio 2.0l 172 it is 3.5 years old! Please help, do you think it is the alternator like they say or a short circuit or something else? What should I do now to make sure I'm not getting conned? Thanks

PS they told me to disconnect the battery to prevent a fire

You could have one of several problems. First being a short somewhere in the system, however usually this will blow a fuse. The voltage regulator now days inside of the alternator, could be what is called full fielding and delivering an overcharge to the battery. To test this get a voltage meter and read the battery voltage with the car off. Note that voltage then start the car and read that voltage. I know here in the states it should be around 14.5 with the motor running. If not that start looking for a short in the wiring.

Disconnect the amplifier and see if the problem persists. If so, then I would start with your alternator. Take it in to get tested. If the alternator tests good, then the next place to check would be your fuse-box. Did any fuses blow? Check your battery connectors to see if they are still properly seated. Sometimes oxidation and corrosion build up and hinder the conductivity.

Hi there, I know nothing about renault's,but alot about cars.I would suspect possible alternator,or shorted charging system wires. One thing do not bring it back to the place you did at first as they do not sound too clever.Ask around who is a good technician, then go see him.Good luck
