I had a strange dream - can anyone tell me what it might mean?
In the dream my husband was fishing. He caught a large colourful fish and asked me to gut it and cook it. When I cut the fish open two live kittens ran out of the fish and started playing by the water. The kittens were fit and healthy. I continued to clean the fish and cook it. Any ideas? I've had a few kitten dreams lately, always involving two healthy live kittens.

To understand a dream, it’s helpful to keep in mind why and how we dream. When we sleep, the body and perception systems are shut down, but the brain stem continues to fire and the cortex remains active. The thoughts that have been most active during waking hours—perceptions, experiences, thoughts and feelings, processed consciously or unconsciously—are still “peaked” and they associate with other images already linked in your cortex. In other words, the brain references this content, but not in a rational way, not using input from the external real world as in waking hours. So the story connectedness isn’t like everyday experience, but rather a strange flow from one image to the next. Therefore, dreams aren’t magical messages to guide our life, but sequences of associated images taken from everyday experiences - thoughts and feelings that matter a lot to us during our waking life. So it’s a mistake to apply one-size-fits-all symbols, such as Freudian meanings or standard “dreammoods” formulas. All you need to do is think about what kind of imagery it is and how it relates to your daily life.
Your imagery is about two conflicting views of animal life. On the one hand, the view that animals need to be killed and eaten for your own survival...a view represented by your husband's fishing activity. The other view...represented by your activity... is that animals are beautiful creatures that should be nurtured and respected. In the dream, your attitude towards animals co-exists along with the other view and persists in spite of it. This isn't a huge conflict in your life, but your feelings towards animals are different from your husbands, and these feelings were probably active when you went to sleep and associated the fish and kitten images in the dream sequence.

This is how I see it from a personal opinion:
As it was your husband catching the fish, I'd say that's got something to do with him being the one that feeds the family/head of the family/sole or main wage earner and if he doesn't perhaps its your desire for him to be so.
Therefore if your husband brought home a nice big colourful fish (wad of cash) you guys could afford two nice fit and healthy kittens? As you also proceeded to clean and cook the fish, it must also represent feeding the family as well.
In my opinion, wanting pets is like wanting offspring, usually you get a cat as a dry run (so to speak).
Therefore on a general level I see it as your personal and perhaps subconscious desire for domestic bliss.

First of all, you love your husband. You see him as a good provider, and the creative force in your marriage, while you are stuck finishing the tasks he begins. There's lots of color and movement in your dream. Lots of positive imagery. It wasn't just a fish--it was a colorful fish. It wasn't just kittens--they were fit and healthy and playful as well. It is also significant that you received one thing--a useful item--and ended up with something useful and something which gives you joy. :) The TWO kittens could indicate positive companionship or could simply represent your family or your desire for a family.

I typed this from the book: ''Dreams and Destinies''
Fish/Fishing:
To see fish swimming in clear water is a good omen, suggesting that you are acquiring deeper self-knowledge. If you were fishing, what you caught (if anything) is important. Carp represent a warning against too much self-criticism. Dead fish may indicate disappointment in your life.
Cat/Kittens:
Cats often symbolise elegant femininity. They are highly sensual and may represent something that you desire. But the cat can quickly turn from a warm, purring creature to an aggressive hunter. If the cat snarls and shows its claws, the dream may suggest that you should be more assertive in waking life.

"Dreaming that you are fishing indicates that you are confronting and bringing your repressed emotions to the surface. In particular, to dream that you are ice fishing, suggests that you are breaking through a hardened emotional barrier and confronting difficult feelings from your unconscious."
--and--
"Seeing fish swimming in your dream means insights from your unconscious mind. Thus to catch a fish, represents insights which have been brought to the surface. The fish is also an ancient symbol of Christianity and Christian beliefs. Consider also the common phrases "like a cold fish", "fish out of water" or something that is "fishy" about a situation. It may also imply a slippery or elusive situation. Dreaming that you are Seeing or eating fish, symbolizes your beliefs, spirituality, luck, energy and nourishment. It is food for the soul. Seeing a dead fish means disappointment and loss of power/wealth. Dreaming of cooking fish indicates that you are incorporating your new realizations with your spiritual feelings and knowledge. Dreaming that you are cleaning fish, suggests that you are altering your emotional expression in a way that will be presentable to others. You are censoring yourself and not expressing how you completely feel."

"Seeing a white kitten in your dream means deceit and trouble. Seeing non-white or soiled kittens, indicates trouble ahead for you."

You're obviously obsessed with kittens. Other than that, your dream means nothing. No dream means anything, ever.

It appears you are thinking about your future with your husband and his chosen career. You understand your role is to be his wife and helper. Your role will soon change to include new things you haven't even considered or have just thought about.
