can't download Yahoo messenger, says need to upgrade explorer,?

You have a very old operating system and a very old version of Internet Explorer, both do not support the new versions of Y! Messenger.

You have two options; go to a site like http://oldversion.com/ to download an older version of Messenger or download Internet Explorer 6.

but dont click on exployer 7, go down on the page on the left,,,,,,, and click to download exployer 6,,,,,,, that should work on windows 98

see if that will work, also, when downloading messenger,,,,,,as you progress threw the download, you have an option to do a custom download instead of full, click that (doing a custom in this case is simple, you dont need technical knowledge), ,,,, then just down load the basic messenger, not the toolbar, and extras it has, that worked better on my windows 98
