IBS - What fruits are bad for you?

Which fruits are likely to cause the symptoms of IBS.

Particulary, diarrhea and flatulence.

I am having to put up with these from my wife, so any help would be appreciated, air freshener is limited!

    Hi

Anything that is acidic in nature is not good for IBS. So fruits like oranges, sunkist are not too good. Fruits which can cause gas like banana (only certain types). Small banana species are fine.

Fruits like papaya, apples, pears are good because of the fiber.

For diarrhea, take calcium supplements, it will help reduce the effects.

Flatulence means there is gas buildup in the stomach. If the gas comes out, it is good. It will then not build up in the stomach and cause pain. If it is smelly, you might like to try cumin/fenugrek tea. Check source for recipe.

If your wife is not milk intolerant, she should start on yogurt which will help in building up good bacteria in the intestines.

    good luck

    Fruits For Ibs

  • 1 decade ago

All fruits give me problems. I was incorrectly diagnosed with IBS for over three years before a visit to Mayo, where I was correctly diagnosed with "fructose intolerance." The condition is similar to lactose intolerance with regard to symptoms. Therefore, I have had to cut out all fruit and fruit juices from my diet, and I am doing great. Hope this helps!

In many people who have IBS, eating may trigger symptoms. However, for most people, there is not a particular type of food that triggers symptoms.

Increasing the amount of fiber in your diet can help control constipation. High-fiber foods include fresh fruits (raspberries, pears, apples), fresh vegetables (peas, brussels sprouts), wheat bran, and whole-grain breads and cereals. Beans such as kidney, pinto, and garbanzo are also high-fiber foods, but they should probably be avoided if gas is one of your symptoms.

You can take steps to reduce the possibility that certain foods will cause symptoms, such as avoiding or limiting gas-producing foods (including beans and cabbage), sugarless chewing gum and candy, caffeine, and alcohol.

No fruits are bad for you as such. 50% of patients with IBS improve with a high fibre diet and 50% get worse. The 50% who feel worse do get less IBS symptoms with low fibre diet, but the disadvantages of this type of diet far outweigh the pluses, so you should still eat plenty of fruit.

I don't know of liver damage by citrus but to much of anything isn't too good! In the case of citrus, too much could give you gastrointestinal ulcers from the fruit acid ! NOT FUN AT ALL !! Citrus leave extract though not dangerous, taken in large quantity can do damage to the liver.

I know this is an old post but in case anyone googles it like I did, I've learned that peels in apple, pears, potatoes etc. can bring on a flare-up - that's what has happened to me.
