What is a Christian?

Christians do not differ from others in habitat, language or custom, they live among Greeks and barbarians wherever life has placed them, they follow local custom in dress and diet , but their way of life is seen as strange to many.

they live in their native land as citizens and share everything with their fellow men,yet are treated as aliens, they marry and have children but do not practice abortion, they share tables but not beds.

They live in the flesh but not according to it,they dwell on earth but regard Heaven as their city, they follow established law and love all, yet are persecuted ,they are condemned and put to death, yet are very much alive.

Briefly, what the soul is to the body,Christians are to the world,as the soul is present in all the body`s parts so are Christians in the world`s cities.

The soul loves the flesh and members which hate it,so do Christians love those who hate them,God has set them in the world as His sentinels, and they may not leave their posts.

Update:

From a letter to Diognetius, 2nd century, from Justin Martyr.

How do we measure up to these early Christian commuities today, my fellow Christians?

I am still trying to figure out what makes me Christian.

I gave my life to Jesus when I was 12 and when I was 15 my mum outed me before I even realised I was gay myself. I didn't realise how strange it was not being girl-crazy and I didn't see myself as effeminate as others did. I thought having gay sex and going to gay bars etc made you gay and I have done neither. Still haven't.

I am 16 now and I am really struggling with my faith and my sexuality. Why did God make me so I do not like girls that way? Why aren't the prayers and laying on of hands not changing me? Is a lonely, loveless life all I have to look forward to?

I love God very much and still want to believe but now that I know there is no place for me in my church if I cannot turn straight, and that does not seem to be happening, I do not know what exactly to call myself or how to define my faith?

A true Christian is a person who has put his or her faith and trust in the person of Jesus Christ and fact that He died on the cross as payment for sins and rose again on the third day to obtain victory over death and to give eternal life to all who believe in Him. John 1:12 tells us: “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” A true Christian is indeed a child of God, a part of God’s true family, and one who has been given new life in Christ. The mark of a true Christian is love for others and obedience to God’s Word (1 John 2:4; 1 John 2:10).

    Good soldier of Jesus Christ

2Tm:2:1: Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

2Tm:2:2: And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

2Tm:2:3: Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

2Tm:2:4: No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

2Tm:2:5: And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.

2Tm:2:6: The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.

2Tm:2:7: Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.

2Tm:2:8: Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:

2Tm:2:9: Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.

2Tm:2:10: Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

2Tm:2:11: It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him:

2Tm:2:12: If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:

2Tm:2:13: If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

Wow, that's cool. I feel that we don't really measure up to the life and zeal these people had, but it's something we should strive for.
