How do I stop my cat from picking at her flea infection?
My cat has dermatitis from fleas. I have taken her twice to the vet and she has had needles, anti biotics and Advantage to kill off the fleas. The fleas are gone but she will not stop licking and picking the scabs (sorry! gross) and it seems to get better, and then go two steps back to worse and bloody and bright pink.
Has anyone experienced something similar with their cat? Will it eventually heal? I am worried it will never get better.
*The Vet doesn't think that the cone on the head will be effective.
Thanks :)

My 10 pound dog,(who thinks she's a cat) has the same problem. The vet told me she was allergic to fleas! Never heard of such a thing. So I have remedied the problem by always using Frontline(r) for fleas and tics. It works like a dream. To purchase it you just call 1-800-PET-MEDS. It did take at least 3 to 4 months before she finally stopped all the chewing and scratching. I guess they just get in the habit and its hard to break. But once it starts to heal, they will stop. I also bathed the area that was raw and scabbed and applied an itch powder to the site. We haven't had any problems for years now. I just make sure I keep those pesky fleas away from my baby!

I am actually surprised that the vet said that the Elizabethan collar wouldn't work....because that is exactly what a vet would recommend! Put the collar on her...the only way she is going to get better is if she leaves it alone to heal properly...and that means to isolate her head so she can't get to it...that's what the E-collars are for!

I use bag balm...get it at the cosmetics counter in walgreens.etc.
its made from honey, and it softens the skin, but doesn't hurt if they eat it....its very gooey and sticky and it takes them ages to get it off, by that time they need a nap..so they leave the scabs alone.

i would try a skin so soft avon product. it soothes the skin and will cut back on some of the itching... if that doesn't work, i would maybe ask your vet for his opinion.
