Because the Tinea fungi thrive in a warm, moist environment, one of the first steps is to try and eliminate this sort of environment in which they are living. In other words, keep the area clean and dry by:
Wear loose-fitting clothing made of cotton — cotton does not produce as much heat and friction as synthetic materials do.
Wear boxer shorts to allow more air flow and reduce chafing.
Avoid wearing occlusive or synthetic clothing (eg. nylon or polyester).
Avoid sharing garments such as clothing or towels.
Wash and dry skin after physical activity or if sweaty.
Dry skin carefully after showering. Use a separate fresh towel to your groin area.
If you're overweight or thighs rub, try to lose weight to reduce chafing and sweating. If your doctor has determined that you do have a tinea infection, a topical antifungal product may be used as treatment. There are a number of different antifungal products available in various forms such as a cream, lotion, spray or powder. Most are available without a prescription from your local pharmacy. The length of time required to treat the infection can vary depending on the product, ranging from seven days, to one month. It is important with all products to apply them regularly, as directed by your doctor or pharmacist and by following the instructions on the label.
After applying topical treatments, be sure to wash your hands and scrub under your nails thoroughly to stop the infection spreading.
If the symptoms are severe, or topical treatment doesn’t work or has failed previously, oral antifungal prescription medication may be used. Treatment should continue until the symptoms clear, and/ or tests performed by a doctor are clear.
