Reliability of the Kia Sportage? 1997-2002?

Thinking of buying a used one but have heard mixed reviews and opinions. Please, I'd like some honest opinions and experiences from those that owned one.

Yes, they are very reliable cars!! Maintainance is the key. You must maintain the vehicles. You can't let the oil run dry like in a Honda and Toyota as some people believe you can. If you do the maintenance all will be fine. If you ignore the simple items then you could have problems.

Drive one then decide for yourself......

I love mine. I bought it used ( 36,000 miles) three years ago. It is a 2000. While still under warranty it needed many things replaced. I mean a lot. They said the warranty co. paid over $11,000 repairing it. I was not very happy with how often it was in the shop at all. After all these things were fixed though there has never been anything at all else go wrong and I have put another 80,000 miles on it. I love the way it drives and I am never stuck anywhere in the winter and we get a lot of snow here. It is very good on gas. Even with gas being a lot right now, I just went to Rhode Island and back to Northern Vt. yesterday for $75. It is about 720 miles round trip. In the winter you do need to keep good snows on it and sometimes you don't get very good traction unless you are in 4WD because when you're not you're just rear wheel drive. I am interested in looking at one of the new ones. They are now front wheel drive when not in 4WD and they are now 6 cylinder as well.

I've known a couple of folks with Kia's and I suppose the easiest way to put it is that they are the "Wal Mart" brand of cars. Seems like a good deal, but you read the ingredient list and you're just like "what in the world is that??" (not literally, but I think you get it, lol)
