US Citizens gave over $300 billion dollars to charities,an all time record this past year. What does that say?

These funds were not from the govenrment (which gave billions around the world to help feed and medicate the poor) these were monies donated by individual citizens to help people. Americans gave, from their own pockets over $300 Billion dollars. These were not funds from the wealthy but from ordinary people who could have used the money for themselves and their families. This is up from last year even though last year included the Tsunami relief and Hurricane Katrina. Are the world leaders who create the ugly American image doing anywhere near this to help those in need?

Update:

Hmm answers are very telling. Does this mean that US people should stop donating to well documented charities here and abroad? Some took this as a chance to take a shot at W somehow. In first ten answers, some from overseas, all were hateful toward Americans and sharing in general. Does no one benefit from these charitable acts, or is it just those answering are so hateful and gloomy that they can take pride in it? Is it then a bad thing that people want to help and will sacrifice for others? What a world you live in I think.

I think it's great. Donating to charity is good, because it helps people, it would be nice if a majority of the money didn't go to administrative fees.

Maybe by making this information public knowledge people will stop giving this country so much s**t. On a separate note, as one of the wealthiest nation it's the least we can do.

    Wow what responses.

It says that Americans are basically good people with good intentions. Much like the poor people of Iraq they have poor leaders. But I think it says that there is hope.

If the money does not end up in the right place that does not negate the thought or the effort.

The ugly American comes from our government who really does do ugly things overseas.

You said by the way that the funds came from the people so why compare that to world leaders?

American and other victims of Hurricane Katrina, or other hurricane in the US, should have been supported by the US government-not by charities. who else gets charities from Americans? The ICTY? "Colour Revolutionists"? Wealthy Israeli organizations? How much charity did former Serbian inmates of prison camps get, for instance, from Americans?

That people are extremely gullible! Most of that money never makes it to those in need, it is pocketed by the bureaucrats running the organization sponsoring the charity and that includes the government.
