what are the basic human rights?
after seeing the quite humorous "is hbo a basic human right?" question--i'm curious to see your answers.
personally, i'm taking the mill route on rights. you have rights to be left alone. your right to life doesn't mean it's my obligation to save you.
life, liberty, and happiness is in the declaration of independence.
life, liberty, and property are in the constitution.

Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness will be the most common answers, but I don't beileve those are 'Fundamental' rights. Initial rights were are all 'endowed with' sure, but I believe all three can be forfit as a result of ones actions. I.E. if you rape and kill children, do you still have a right to your Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness? I don't think so.
So as far as basic (intrensic) rights perhaps something more along the lines of 'Fair access to legal representation' and 'freedom from torture'. Though those are pretty open to interpritation as well.
All and all I believe the US Constitution pretty well hits it with most of the Bill of Rights. If society is trying to strip away your rights then you should have other rights. Right to face your accuser, right to timely trial by jury, Habius Corpus ect. And if it is determined you have forfited your rights to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness by infringing on others said rights, then you have well....forfited them. But if thats possible they can't be basic human rights can they?
In short, Basic Human Rights can't really be accurately defined past the right of the individual to have a fair shake at the hands of society. Because keep in mind that anything you label as Basic Human Rights nowadays applies to the worst of the worst. Where as a criminal used to be removed from consideration in that discussion.
Suppose it says something about how we have developed as a society when we can take a confessed child-raping murderer and say 'He's not that bad of a guy once you get to know him, you have no right to take his Life, Liberty and Pursuit of HBO.'
