What can I do to ease the pain from kidney stones?

Hi- I guess my name of this site should be "Kidney Stone Queen"- Just passed one this week! I've had these offensive things for years, and it is a dude's closest thing to a man going through labor pains. HAVE YOU GONE TO THE DR YET? IF NOT, DO SO!!!! When I get these, I go and get shots (have a driver)- There are diagnostic tests that will pinpoint the exact location of the stone/stones- some stones are able to be surgically removed (if you are lucky) - there is lithotripsy or a procedure where they can take a wire to pull the stone out (under general anesthesia) if this is the case. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO GO TO THE DOCTOR. In the meantime, ways to help you out with the easing of pain: DRINK LOTS OF FLUID- CRANBERRY JUICE IS THE BEST- IF YOU DON'T LIKE THIS, MAKE SURE YOU ARE DRINKING LOTS OF FLUIDS! ALSO, YOU MUST GET TO AN EMERGENCY ROOM, AS THEY CAN GIVE YOU A NARCOTIC PAIN MED TO TAKE DURING THIS AGONIZING TIME. IN ADDITION, MANY PEOPLE GET NAUSEATED DURING AN ATTACK. THERE ARE PILLS CALLED PHENERGAN THAT HELP CALM DOWN THE VOMITTING DURING AN ATTACK. IT IS DIFFICULT TO RELAX AND LAY DOWN WHEN IN THIS MUCH PAIN. WALKING IS A GOOD WAY, AND IF YOU ARE LUCKY, ONCE YOU'VE BEEN TO THE DR. FOR THIS PROBLEM, YOU MAY BE ABLE TO LAY DOWN. AT THE ER, LIKE I SAID, A SHOT IS GENERALLY GIVEN. THE URINE TEST WILL SHOW BLOOD, WHICH IS THE FIRST CLUE FOR THE DR. TO VALIDATE THE MEDICATIONS YOU NEED. TORYDOL IS AN IM (INTRAMUSCULAR SHOT) THAT HELPS WITH THE SPASMS. OTHER INGREDIANTS MAY BE PUT IN THE SHOT, LIKE DEMEROL, TALWIN, ETC. WHEN @ THE ER, THEY WILL ALLOW YOU TIME TO SEE IF ANY OF THIS IS WORKING, AS YOU MAY NEED ANOTHER INJECTION. SOME PEOPLE ARE ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL FOR THIS CONDITION (BEEN IN THERE SEVERAL TIMES FOR THIS- WAS PREGNANT DURING ONE THE NUMEROUS TIMES- HOSPITALIZED SEVERAL TIMES DURING THIS TIME-WHEN I DID GO INTO LABOR, I ALSO HAD ANOTHER ATTACK, THE ATTACK WAS MUCH WORSE THAN THE LABOR PAINS)- AN IV CAN HELP WITH THE FLUID INTAKE, AND IN ADDITION, PAIN MEDICATION CAN BE GIVEN THROUGH THE IV. It is VERY difficult to ease the pain if you don't go to the Doctor. Also, when having an attack, all urine needs to be strained. A "hat" can be sent home (fits in under the toilet lid), and a strainer, also. When the stone is finally "delivered", it is sent in for analysis. There are different kinds of stones- common one is calcium (this is the type I pass). It is important to know what type of stone you are passing, as there may be recommendations for what you can do to prevent these attacks in the future. You can TRY to take a shower/bath to ease some of this horrible pain, if you can tolerate this. Another test that more than likely needs to be done is a CT Scan or MRI to indicate exactly where the stone/stones are located. (The last time I had this done, they were invading both of my uterers. The ureters are between the kidneys and the bladder. This is when the blood in the urine is the worst- as some kidney stones have very pointed edges, which is a double whammy- trying to flush out a very pointy object is NOT FUN!) THE ONLY WAY YOU ARE GOING TO KNOW ANY OF THIS INFORMATION IS BY GOING TO SEE THE DR- PREFERABLY THE EMERGENCY ROOM. I am sorry I have written so much- I am sorry for what you are going through. If any over the counter will help "ease" the pain, it should be an anti-inflammatory med, such as ibprophen or Aleve. PLEASE GO TO THE ER STAT! THESE TIPS MAY BE HELPFUL TO YOU, BUT, IT IS ESSENTIAL YOU GO TO THE ER! If this becomes a Chronic condition for you, your Dr. SHOULD refer you to a Urologist. Footnote: My stones are so small, that I can have neither procedure done. I just have to deal with it, and stones are so unpredictable. I hoped this helped you somewhat. Take care-Good Luck- and GO SEE A DOCTOR!!

There really isn't anything you can do other than take the prescribed pain medication that you could have been given. You don't mention if this is a repeat condition, or if this is the first time. This is very painful. I would go to the ER and let them handle it for you. There are times when a stone is so big it obstructs the flow of urine from the kidney to the bladder and can damage a kidney, and you don't want that. The hospital will have you urinate and strain it to catch any crystals or possible stones that may pass. There are Drs. that will have the stones analyzed to determine the make up.
Always drink plenty of water and avoid soda or pop. Talk with your physician to find out if you can prevent these by eliminating anything from your diet. Good luck to you, it usually gets worse before it gets better.

I went to the ER once and they did NOTHING- they just watched me- gave me some hydration but NO pain meds or anything- I had to spend the next couple of hours passing a stone in a COLD er room (with stones, you run a fever seometimes and are cold and hot off and on- not pleasant)- I could have at least spent hte time at home in a more comfortable environment, and been able to yell out in pain when needed- couldn't do that in the hospital-
Just spent 7 hours last night passing a very painful stone- pain in right back was so intense I was vomitting 3 times, and dry heaves and blackign out from pain- I pass at least one small stone per week, with lots of 'sand' (stoen that has broken up to a fine grain) throughout hte week- I fidn that when I eat lots of salty stuff liek crackers- the stones seems to becoem more itnense- not sure if there is a connection or not, might just be coincidence- but over hte years- it seems that when I go on craving binges and eat whoel boxes of thingsl iek cheese-its, a sleeve of saltines etc- I'll experience a particularly painful stone in the following week or so-
If you are havign regular stones, you shoudl go to healthcare facility and see abotu gettign soem pain meds to have on hand for when stones appear-, take at the FIRST sign of symptoms (a slight burning in urine, or innability to urinate, or slight pain) and immediately drink lots of water or cranberry juice as you'll need the hydration later, and it will help to flush stone through easier
You can try putting heatign pad on kidney area, sometimes when the pain is not too intense this can really help ease pain some. Walking around seems to help move the stone soemtimes, sometimes not-

I am about to undergo a possible 6 - 8 Hour operation on the 25th February, Due to me having 2 Kidney Stones in my Bladder that are the size of a 700G Dairy egg and one a bit smaller in my Kidney.
Before I go on Let me inform you all that I am a 41 Year old Spina bifida sufferer from Australia, I am in a Wheelchair.
I only found out that I had these stones when I kept getting Blood clots in my urine , and frequently having to change my Depend Undergarments sometimes 2 - 3 times a day, which I have to wear due to me being incontinent in Bowel and Bladder
Apparently I have had these stones for the last 20 or so Years but only found out about them in November last year

The best thing to do is go to the doctor if you have not already. Over the counter pain meds will not help with the pain from kidney stones. You need medical treatment to make sure the stones will pass on there own.

I'm a long-time kidney stone sufferer so I feel your pain.
The only thing that seems to work well for me are major painkillers like Percaset or Demerol. Tylenol 3's work when the pain is mild.
I've also heard that if you have a really hot bath (as hot as you can manage without scalding yourself). that it will help the pain as well. I can't say I've ever tried that though.

Try rolling on the floor. 2 or 3 turns. It helps to move the stone from blocking the urine. My doctor also recommended a beer. I assume the carbonation helps. He also makes sure I have some pain meds just in case. He says stones always appear on weekends, holidays or when he's on vacation. Good to be prepared.

Only a change in diet can help your kidneys function better. Include foods in your diet that help build up your kidneys. These include sprouts, garlic, legumes, potatoes, bananas, papayas, watermelon, green vegetables, whole grains, yoghurt and beans.
I personally had suffered from mental fogginess, weight gain for no reason, depression and inability to focus along with a slew of other annoying digestive disorders. After about 3 weeks following the suggestions on this site
( http://bit.ly/KidneyStoneRemedy )- my quality of life returned and every one of the symptoms have gone.
