Do friction modifiers that are added to automotive fuel really work or just "marketing gimmick"?

Fuel additive are not FRICTION modifiers. They often are injector cleaners and such. And as those function they actually work.

As for the friction modifiers are often for OIL additive. Here's a little factoid: oil manufacturers already add friction modifiers.

Think about it, by adding soap to water you can dramatically decrease friction without dramatically increasing the viscosity.

BUT adding more friction modifiers probably won't work. There's only so much soap you can add to water and there's only so much friction modifer that can be added to the amount already in the oil. In fact it may interfere with what's already in there.

    Oil Additives

Do not use any oil additives no matter how much they are hyped on TV. They provide no benefit and can interfere and react with the additives already present in the oil. Some additives have particles that can clog oil passages and clog filters. Common additives that are heavily hyped are Slick 50, Duralube, and Prolong.

    Gimmick.

automotive fuel is a liquid, like water, you can't modify it to flow smoother via friction. if it had friction, you're in trouble.

every oil change, add a bottle of fuel injector cleaner. You're done.
