understiching facing on jacket edge?

maybe I'm thick... I've looked through sewing forums and found several explanations of understiching. BUT - what I don't get is, if I sew the seam allowance to the facing - won't that show on the right side of the facing? So when I open my jacket, won't you see the three-step zig-zag, and won't it look funny?

Thanks for your very specific, detailed help... with pictures, if possible?? I understand the stich, but not how it looks!!!

I'm not sure what you mean by the three-step zig zag. When I understitch, I use a straight stitch very close to the seam. It's almost unnoticable when done properly; it looks more like topstitching than anything else. Here's a picture of what it should look like on the right side of the facing.

I do the understitching in straight stitch about a quarter inch from the seam line. No it won't show, but will hold the facing neatly to the seam allowance. Be careful to keep your stitching line as even as possible.
