why are there ridges on the roof of our mouths?

Just curious. My dog has them all the way back, I just have a few toward the front. What is the point of this? Why does my dog have more?

Update:

hmm. Yeah, I figured the first bit somewhat. But my cat has more too. She definitely doesn't have a bigger mouth. I was thinking it might have to do with diet? Like... they are more carnivorous than I am. I donno.

They help with manipulating food and swallowing. Your dog has more because a dog's mouth is larger than a human's.
