Do you know that wearing 'baju kurung' is an art?
The beauty of baju kurung is that the accessories are not only the 'kerosang' or brooch but also non material accessories like the way the wearer walks, behaves, talks, smiles etc. or in other word 'sopan santun'.
A woman who wants to try baju kurung i think need to learn the art so that she will be seen wearing a complete set of baju kurung
What do you think?
Baju kurung is a traditional Malay dress or costume
Bean, I'm very sure Mrs Bean knows what is baju kurung
Here's the photo:
LegalAlien, I've never worn a baju kurung before so can't tell how it feels. But I do know the dress has been around for centuries here in Malaysia and still very popular.
From the word 'kurung' [means 'trapped'or 'locked up'] itself it may suggest that the wearer should be 'restricted' from doing certain kind of movement, act, behavior, etc. Perhaps, I don't know.
Can I have some comments from regular baju kurung wearers please?
Yes Gal, smoking and baju kurung won't mix - kelihatan kurang sopan
AQ, I don't know much about geisha, perhaps you can tell us here about the similarities and the differences
A baju kurung itself is an art
PP, i mean smoking while one in baju kurung looks 'kurang sopan'. I think most smokers here understand what I meant

In a way, yes it is an art. Coz when i wear a baju kurung/kebaya, my body movement became very restrictive, cant move much, cant walk too fast; afraid i may fall in my clumsiness.
Certain kebaya/baju kurung materials are of expensive silk, organza etc and I need to be careful when i wear them so i will not ruin them. Care should be taken on the way i sit, where i will be sitting, and if i carry my baby definitely i will choose a more heavy duty type of baju kurung.
Etiquette wise, a girl in baju kurung can still smoke and maintain elegance provided that she is seated. But if elegance isnt on her mind, yeah she could smoke any way she likes, while standing waiting for the bus or while slicing those onions in the kitchen. So it is not a bad thing to see a woman in baju kurung smoking. I am cool with that.

I don't know about art but it's always about being formal or being polite. If it indeed an art to wear baju kurung, then some people have ruined it cos they pay hundreds or even thousands to make a baju kurung by buying expensive material just to show off with one another. Does it really matter who is wearing expensive and non-expensive baju kurung? Btw, i like wearing baju kedah back at college day and wearing baju kurung at sekolah menengah.

i do no longer know approximately artwork notwithstanding it particularly is oftentimes approximately being formal or being polite. If it certainly an artwork to positioned on baju kurung, then some human beings have ruined it cos they pay hundreds or perhaps hundreds to make a baju kurung by ability of paying for costly fabric just to coach off with one yet another. Does it particularly count huge sort who's donning costly and non-costly baju kurung? Btw, i admire donning baju kedah back in school day and donning baju kurung at sekolah menengah.

Yes it can be considered as an art. But I think we shouldn't put any restriction on how people behave as long as they do no harm to the community. If males can do it, females should have equal rights too.
The word "sopan santun" is very subjective. For certain action, some will say yes, some no ... But if u say smoking is tidak sopan then a lot people would not be happy with it.

Errr.. sort of.. I think.
But, is it comfy? Doesn't it feel literally hot and humid in the baju kurung, especially in tropical countries? Doesn't it restrict the body movement, especially when the woman is in a hurry or needs to do something quickly or wants to 'go' in the loo?
Teach me, please. I'd like to know. Thanks.
Have a good day..
