Homework help?

I am trying to help my daughter with her math homework. I feel like an idiot.

A bat was flying for six hours at an average speed of 8 kilometers per hour. The bat flew at 12 kilometers per hour during the first two hours of its flight. How fast did the bat fly the last 4 hours?

    Easy enough. Just a sec.

    K. So the bat flew an average of 8 km/h for six hours. From this, you can find the total distance the bat flew over the six hours.

    8 km/h * 6 h = 8*6 = 48 km

This is important, because in order to find the distance flown in the last 4 hours, you need to subtract the known distance flown in the first 2 hours.

So for the first 2 hours, the bat flew 12 km/h. So over 2 hours, the bat flew:

    12 km/h * 2 h = 12*2 = 24 km.

Now we know that the bat flew 48 km in 6 hours, and during the first 2 hours, the bat flew 24 km. So how far did the bat fly during the last 4 hours?

    48 - 24 = 24 km.

Now you just have to set this up as a ratio.

    24 km / 4 h = x km / 1 h

    Set this up and cross-multiply.

    24*1/4 = 6 km/h

Therefore, the bat flew 6 km/h during the last four hours.

we know that at 6 hours the bat was flying at the average speed of 8 kilometers per hour, which means that whatever divided by 6 will equal 8 kilometers per hour.

so start with the set up of the equation:

since the bat flew at 12 km per hour the first two hours then, we have

    (12 + x) / 6 = 8 km

    ((12+x)/6) x 6 = 8 x 6

    12 + x = 48

    12 - 12 + x = 48 - 12

    x = 36

don't complicate the problem by dividing 12 / 2 = 6 to get 6 per hour. you can't tell how fast the bat was flying the 3rd hour, 4th hour, 5th hour, and 6th hour, because there is not enough information about those time intervals. all we know is that the bat was flying at an average speed of 8 km per hour. the key word is average which means sum up the kilometers and divide by 6 to get to the average km per hour.

this means that the last 4 hours, the bat flew 36 kilometers because we already know how fast the bat was flying, which is 8 km / per hour.

    good luck.

So the bat flew 6 hours at avg speed of 8 km/hr right ... so that means it covered 6*8=48 Kms in whole

Now the first 2 hours it flew at 12 km/hr ... so it covered 12*2=24 kms

    Left is 48-24= 24 Kms

    Left time is 6-2=4 hours

    So it flew at a speed = 24/4 Hrs = 6 Kms

So it flew at 6 kms hr for the last 4 hours of the journey

ok idk if this is right or not but yeah.

ok the bat went 8 kph for 6 hrs...so that means it traveled a total distance of 48 km.

for the first 2 hrs it goes 12 kph and traveled a total distance of 24 km.

then subtract 48 - 24 and you get 24 km. it then flies for 4 hrs. so 24/4 = 6kph.

lol i think that is right.
