What is the significance of the Bat in the cathedral in Aachen?

On a recent visit we saw the bats, one on the corner of the cathedral, one on the back of the eagle.

What is the significance of the Bat here, especially on the eagle?

I have searched online and not found anything.

    Bats have been the natural "inhabitants" of the Aachener Dom since its construction, and still live there, now under environmental protection laws as an endangered species. I simply suppose the Aachen stonemasons set them a monument, as their daily companions, and would not put any special meaning to it.
