Cure for constipation for a two year old?
This is a list of things that I've tried:
- Fruits
- Fiber
- Water
- Probiotic (from Pedi)
- Stool Softener (from Pedi)
- Soy Milk under Pedi's recommendation
She's been having this problem since she was born pretty much. Anyone can help me here?
Ty for the great inputs so far. My daughter would cry, kicking and screaming everytime she goes, and sometimes blood would appear as well. I have gone to the Pedi (she suggested the probiotic and the stool softener for a short-run). She doesn't have any appetite problems. I just feel sorry for her cause I know she's in pain everytime she goes to the bathroom to poop.

Lots of fruits and fruits juices. Prunes and prune juice are the best. Grains, cereals. Anything with fiber in it. Give her some Light Karo Syrup. Try milk of magnessia (talk to a pharmasist about the proper dose). There is a new product out (not so new anymore) called Fibersure. Start with only 1/8 teaspoon mixed with any food or drink three times a day and slowly work up the dose until it does the trick. Don't do more than 1/2 teaspoon per dose.
My son now almost 3 had lots of problems with constipation. Doctors kept telling me to use suppositories. In my opinion they become dependent on the suppositories if they are used to long. I don't recomend them for long term use. I had the biggest luck with Fibersure. I think I used 1/4 teaspoon in his bottle three times a day. I still use it on him occasionally. It don't have any taste. You really can mix it with water and you can't tell the difference. I've even used it with the adult dose. Gratest product ever.

My son, who is now 11 and perfectly fine, had constipation problems from birth to about 2 and a half years old when the doctor finally (new doctor) recognized the problem and had me give him mineral oil. It worked wonders. He used to be in pain so often and nothing helped. I started withn 2 tablespoons twice a day -- doctor's recommendation for the starting dosage. It helped immediately and continued to totally
alleviate the problem as long as he ahd the mineral oil. I lowered the amount slowly over time and he was still taking it by 5 years old -- though it was down to perhaps 2 teaspoons only once a day. I wanted really badly for the issue to be dealt with before I began toilet training him because I didn't want it to become confused with that. Now that I think about it, he still was taking it maybe every other day even at 7 years old but, probably not much passed that. It has no side effects and doesn't interfere with digestion in any way. Check with your doc but it is so much better than a stool softener or a laxative.

My daughter had the same problem as well. If none of the above answers are helping her out, even what the doctor is recommending, you may want to talk to the doc about a cat scan of her abdomen. There can be some sort of obstruction and/or blockage. You can also push around on her abdomen in different areas and see if she has any pain when you do so. You are also probably concerned that she is not eating very well, that's just a guess, and I say that because with being constipated, she probably feels full. So once you get the problem cleared up, you will see an increase in her appetite.
Also, if you are using a stool softener or enimas my only concern is if the child will become dependent on that in the future.
Again, since she is already 2 and has had the issue since birth, I would really talk to the doc about the cat scan.
Good luck!!!

Everyone's bowel movements differ; some people go once/twice a week and others go once/twice a day.
What do you consider constipation? Is your child crying and straining every day? Have you had to have impacted stools removed? How often have you spoken to your doctor about this?
Sounds like you have a different idea of regularity than the pediatrician might. Consider a second medical opinion but PLEASE- don't consider remedies from untrained non-medical people on the internet. The last thing you want is landing your kid in the hospital, and believe me- protective services will not take kindly to your getting medical information on Yahoo Answers if your child is injured (however well-intentioned).

Skip the soy, it isn't good for girls, or anyone really. Read up on that if you want. Soy is bad stuff.
Try keifer or yogurt. If she can't do cow milk, try goat milk. Or skip milk she doesn't *have* to have milk at 2 yrs old. Plain water and a good diet would be fine.
You could even try Almond Milk or Rice Dream alternatives. A person can be sensitive to both dairy and soy at the same time.
Plenty of water always, plenty of vitamin C rich foods, possibly a gummy vit. C from the health food store.
eta: I'm shocked at how many people say Mineral oil...that junk might be inert, but it is NOT food and doesn't belong in the body.

You need to have the pediatritian run some tests she may be allergic to milk if this has been going on since birth. Formula allergies and milk allergies are related alot of the time. You could cut back on the milk until a doctor appointment can be scheduled. Thats the only thing I can think of unless it is an intestinal problem and then you would definitly want to take her to the doctor. Hope you figure it out.

You've probably tried prune juice right? Would he eat All bran for breakfast if you put some honey on it to make it tasty? Avoid constipating foods like rice and bananas and cheese.

If she has been having these problems since birth, I think I would talk to her pediatrition about it. My first daughter had the same thing and it was from the iron that she was getting from the formula and from the tap water that I was using. Her doctor suggested milk of magnessia about 1/2- 1 teaspoon everyother day to help. The only problem that she had from that was gas, but it did help the constipation.
