why don't you send her to a retirement home

    I know that sounds mean

but that way she gets taken care of by nurses and such

OK, slow down. You need to find out what help is available in your area. Too many states have cities or towns named "Oakdale" so nobody out here will be able to give you specifics about your particular location.

In some areas, housing under $1,000 per month would be easy, and in others it is non-existent. In Oakdale, California, you'd be incredibly lucky to find anything. In Oakdale, Louisiana, that $1,000 will get you into a mansion.

So, first up, talk to your local social services department. Not just to the person helping you fill out the forms, but to someone that really understands the system in your area.

Often, people go in asking for specific things, which the social services folks may or may not be able to provide.

Instead, calmly describe your situation, and ask what help is available. DO NOT go in talking about the particular program that you heard about from a friend or on TV. It may not apply to you, and your friend (or the TV person) may not have a clue how that program actually works.

Next, remember that there are other agencies that can help. Look for organizations like the Salvation Army, Volunteers of America and the Goodwill. Even if they cannot help you directly, they often have connections in other organizations that can.

    Hope this helps!
