Flash drives, otherwise know as pen drives, are very common these days but they are not "needed" for anything at all. They are used to hold information that you wish to take with you more portably so you don't have to lug around a mini hard drive or any cables and crap.

They are basically just a small usb connector that plugs into your computer's USB port and you can transfer as much info as the drive will hold. Most of the old ones were anywhere from 16mb and up to 128mb. Now a days you can buy one from 512mb all the way up to 4gb and beyond :)

I had one until recently losing it, and i plan to buy another one really soon. You can get them really cheap at www.newegg.com and you can always get free if you can find them too :)

    Good Luck!

hi USB flash drives are NAND-type flash memory data storage devices integrated with a USB (universal serial bus) connector. They are typically small, lightweight, removable and rewritable. (USB Memory card readers are also available, whereby rather than being built-in, the memory is a removable flash memory card housed in what is otherwise a regular USB flash drive, as described below.)

USB flash drives offer potential advantages over other portable storage devices, particularly the floppy disk. They are more compact, faster, hold more data, are more reliable due to their lack of moving parts, and have a more durable design. Additionally, it has become increasingly common for computers to ship without floppy disk drives. USB ports, on the other hand, appear on almost every current mainstream PC and laptop. These types of drives use the USB mass storage standard, supported natively by modern operating systems such as Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and other Unix-like systems.

    good luck

hey it's free, grab as many as you can. you can figure out later where you want to use it.. ;-)

You would need many of it later, like you needed several CD's or DVD's to burn your reports, or floppy disk of older vintage...

The Flash drive uses Flash memory technology where your data (either files, documents, pictures, notes, MP3 songs) are stored in non-volatile memory. Meaning it is written there until you want to delete it.

If it being given away for free --

    1. it could be of low volume flash disk - like 128MB or 64MB even. But even so, it's free memory to bring along

    2. it could be low quality types - third generation memory devices, made in china. Might conk out later.

    3. it could be promotional items subsidized by the company. but they would still use low cost materials -- right?

Why discuss this? -- so that you know that if it is cheap and free, somehow it can be low quality and short life product. Meaning you would not want to store a file in the Flash drive which is important and that there is no other storage for it. Just use it as a copy disk when you need to immediately send a letter or print pictures at your local printer shop.

    cheers and enjoy the freedies...

Flash drive usually use USB to connect to your computer and look like another drive so you can backup to that. They are most useful for taking files to another computer.

Sure you do. It is like carrying around all you info, on a small stick. They plug into your usb port, and you can save all your pictures, documents and music.

Free, get all they will give you. Great for mailing stuff to your friends and family.
